BACKGROUND: The deep sea represents the largest marine ecosystem, driving global-scale biogeochemical cycles. Microorganisms are the most abundant biological entities and play a vital role in the cycling of organic matter in such ecosystems. The primary food source for abyssal biota is the sedimentation of particulate organic polymers. However, our knowledge of the specific biopolymers available to deep-sea microbes remains largely incomplete. One crucial rate-limiting step in organic matter cycling is the depolymerization of particulate organic polymers facilitated by extracellular enzymes (EEs). Therefore, the investigation of active EEs and the microbes responsible for their production is a top priority to better understand the key nutrient sources for deep-sea microbes. RESULTS: In this study, we conducted analyses of extracellular enzymatic activities (EEAs), metagenomics, and metatranscriptomics from seawater samples of 50-9305 m from the Mariana Trench. While a diverse array of microbial groups was identified throughout the water column, only a few exhibited high levels of transcriptional activities. Notably, microbial populations actively transcribing EE genes involved in biopolymer processing in the abyssopelagic (4700 m) and hadopelagic zones (9305 m) were primarily associated with the class Actinobacteria. These microbes actively transcribed genes coding for enzymes such as cutinase, laccase, and xyloglucanase which are capable of degrading phytoplankton polysaccharides as well as GH23 peptidoglycan lyases and M23 peptidases which have the capacity to break down peptidoglycan. Consequently, corresponding enzyme activities including glycosidases, esterase, and peptidases can be detected in the deep ocean. Furthermore, cell-specific EEAs increased at 9305 m compared to 4700 m, indicating extracellular enzymes play a more significant role in nutrient cycling in the deeper regions of the Mariana Trench. CONCLUSIONS: Transcriptomic analyses have shed light on the predominant microbial population actively participating in organic matter cycling in the deep-sea environment of the Mariana Trench. The categories of active EEs suggest that the complex phytoplankton polysaccharides (e.g., cutin, lignin, and hemicellulose) and microbial peptidoglycans serve as the primary nutrient sources available to deep-sea microbes. The high cell-specific EEA observed in the hadal zone underscores the robust polymer-degrading capacities of hadal microbes even in the face of the challenging conditions they encounter in this extreme environment. These findings provide valuable new insights into the sources of nutrition, the key microbes, and the EEs crucial for biopolymer degradation in the deep seawater of the Mariana Trench. The global consumption of meat products is on the rise, leading to concerns about sustainability, fat content, and shelf life. Synthetic additives and preservatives used to extend the shelf life of meat often have negative health and environmental implications. Natural polysaccharides such as seed gums possess unique techno-functional properties, including water holding capacity, emulsifying, and film forming, offering potential alternatives in meat processing and preservation. This study explores the use of gums in meat and meat product processing and preservation. The water holding and emulsifying properties of gums can potentially bind fat and reduce overall lipid content, while their antimicrobial and film-forming properties can inhibit the microbial growth and reduce oxidation, thereby extending the shelf life. Incorporating gums as a fat replacer and edible coating shows promise for reducing fat content and extending the shelf life of meat and meat products.

Biopolymeric nanoparticles (NPs) have gained significant attention in several areas as an alternative to synthetic polymeric NPs due to growing environmental and immunological concerns. Among the most promising biopolymers is poly(lactic acid) (PLA), with a reported high degree of biocompatibility and biodegradability. In this work, PLA NPs were synthesized according to a controlled gelation process using a combination of single-emulsion and nanoprecipitation methods. This study evaluated the influence of several experimental parameters for accurate control of the PLA NPs' size distribution and aggregation. Tip sonication (as the stirring method), a PLA concentration of 10 mg/mL, a PVA concentration of 2.5 mg/mL, and low-molecular-weight PLA (Mw = 5000) were established as the best experimental conditions to obtain monodisperse PLA NPs. After gelification process optimization, flutamide (FLU) was used as a model drug to evaluate the encapsulation capability of the PLA NPs. The results showed an encapsulation efficiency of 44% for this cytostatic compound. Furthermore, preliminary cell viability tests showed that the FLU@PLA NPs allowed cell viabilities above 90% up to a concentration of 20 mg/L. The comprehensive findings showcase that the PLA NPs fabricated using this straightforward gelification method hold promise for encapsulating cytostatic compounds, offering a novel avenue for precise drug delivery in cancer therapy.

Nanoparticles (NPs) have been extensively investigated for their potential in nanomedicine. There is a significant level of enthusiasm about the potential of NPs to bring out a transformative impact on modern healthcare. NPs can serve as effective wound dressings or delivery vehicles due to their antibacterial and pro-wound-healing properties. Biopolymer-based NPs can be manufactured using various food-grade biopolymers, such as proteins, polysaccharides, and synthetic polymers, each offering distinct properties suitable for different applications which include collagen, polycaprolactone, chitosan, alginate, and polylactic acid, etc. Their biodegradable and biocompatible nature renders them ideal nanomaterials for applications in wound healing. Additionally, the nanofibers containing biopolymer-based NPs have shown excellent anti-bacterial and wound healing activity like silver NPs. These NPs represent a paradigm shift in wound healing therapies, offering targeted and personalized solutions for enhanced tissue regeneration and accelerated wound closure. The current review focuses on biopolymer NPs with their applications in wound healing.

The global trend toward sustainable development, coupled with growing concerns about environmental pollution and the depletion of fossil energy resources, has contributed to the widespread implementation of biopolymers (BPs) as bio-solutions for geo-infrastructures stabilization. In this respect, previous attempts proved that soil treatment with BP can guarantee the strength improvement of geo-materials by satisfying environmental standards. However, the applications, mechanisms, and interactions of BPs within geo-environments need more investigations on their suitability for specific sites, long-term durability, and economic viability. The present study aims to provide an in-depth and up-to-date analysis of BPs and outline potential future paths toward BP applications. To this end, after examining the process of producing BPs, we investigate bio-physicochemical behavior and their function mechanism within the soil matrix. In addition, the impact of environmental conditions on soil stabilization with BPs is evaluated. Finally, some recommendations are offered for selecting the types and doses of BPs to improve soil against erosion and to obtain high hydrodynamic resistance. The results outline that bio-chemical mechanisms (including bio-cementing, bio-clogging, bio-encapsulation, and bio-coating) play significant roles in stabilizing cohesive and non-cohesive soil properties. Besides, the findings suggest that the efficacy of BPs depends upon various factors, including the composition and concentration of BPs, soil characteristics, and the magnitude of electrostatic and van der Waals forces formed during bio-chemo-reaction, biocrystallization, and bio-gel production. Between various BPs, using Xanthan gum (XG) and Guar gum (GG) exhibited optimal efficacy, enhancing mechanical strength by up to 300%. Furthermore, BPs concurrently reduced permeability, erosion, compressibility, and shrinkage characteristics. Applying BPs in soils improves germination and vegetation growth, lowers the wilting rate, and reduces soil acidity (considering their natural origin). Overall, selecting suitable BPs was found to be dependent on key factors, including temperature, curing time, and pH. The findings from this study can provide a scientific foundation for planning, constructing and preserving of bio-geo-structures in various construction sites.

Recently, food spoilage caused by pathogens has been increasing. Therefore, applying control strategies is essential. Bacteriophages can potentially reduce this problem due to their host specificity, ability to inhibit bacterial growth, and extend the shelf life of food. When bacteriophages are applied directly to food, their antibacterial activity is lost. In this regard, bacteriophage-loaded biopolymers offer an excellent option to improve food safety by extending their shelf life. Applying bacteriophages in food preservation requires comprehensive and structured information on their isolation, culturing, storage, and encapsulation in biopolymers for active food packaging applications. This review focuses on using bacteriophages in food packaging and preservation. It discusses the methods for phage application on food, their use for polymer formulation and functionalization, and their effect in enhancing food matrix properties to obtain maximum antibacterial activity in food model systems.

Iron is an important micronutrient that cannot be added directly into food products due to potential reactions with the food matrix, impact on color, and taste. Complexed biopolymeric nanocarriers can overcome these challenges particularly for oral delivery of iron, but selecting appropriate biopolymers, their ratio and pH of complexation is very important. In this study, whey protein concentrate (WPC)-pectin nanocomplexes were prepared at different concentrations (WPC 4, 6 and 8%; pectin 0.5, 0.75 and 1%), and pH (3, 6 and 9) to encapsulate iron. The smallest carriers were observed at pH 3; higher pH led to higher zeta potential (zero to -32.5 mV). Encapsulation efficiency of iron in nanocarriers formulated at pH = 3, 6 and 9 were 87.83, 75.92 and 20%, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the spherical particles at pH 3. To conclude, a WPC to pectin ratio of 4: 1 at pH 3 was the best conditions for loading iron.

Recent times have witnessed a growing demand for sustainable technology for food preservation that can retain its freshness, promises lower contents of additives and preservatives, safe consumption, eco-friendly milder processing technologies and eco-friendlier packaging solutions. Application of Biopolymers has served as the most sustainable and viable option to its synthetic counterparts. These biopolymers have been incorporated to develop biodegradable packaging like edible films and coatings owing to their biological origin. Nanoemulsion technology offers a leap forward to upgrade the features of conventional biodegradable packaging items. The present review discusses various trends and perspectives of nanoemulsion technology in post-harvest preservation for enhancing the shelf life of fresh fruits and vegetables. It investigates the interconnectedness between food preservation techniques, biodegradable packaging materials made from biopolymers, and nanoemulsions. It further addresses the preservation challenges post-harvest and underscores the limitations of conventional preservation methods, advocating for eco-friendly alternatives with a specific focus on the potential of nanoemulsions in enhancing food safety and quality. This review elaborates on the composition, formulation techniques, nanoemulsion products and role of nanoemulsions in the management of foodborne pathogens. Furthermore, it examines the potential health hazards linked to the use of nanoemulsions and stresses the significance of a regulatory framework for food safety. In conclusion, this review offers insights into the promising prospects of using nanoemulsions in food preservation.

In the pursuit of enhancing food packaging, nanotechnology, particularly green silver nanoparticles (G-AgNPs), have gained prominence for its remarkable antimicrobial properties with high potential for food shelf-life extension. Our study aims to develop corn starch-based coating materials reinforced with G-AgNPs. The mechanical properties were examined using a uniaxial tensile tester, revealing that starch coated with the highest G-AgNPs concentration (12.75 ppm) exhibited UTS of 87.6 MPa compared to 48.48 MPa of control paper, a significant (p < 0.02) 65% increase. The assessment of the WVP showcased a statistical reduction in permeability by up to 8% with the incorporation of the hydrophobic layer. Furthermore, antibacterial properties were assessed following ISO 22196:2011, demonstrating a strong and concentration-dependent activity of G-AgNPs against E. coli. All samples successfully disintegrated in both simulated environments (soil and seawater), including samples presenting G-AgNPs. In the food trial analysis, the presence of starch and G-AgNPs significantly reduced weight loss after 6 days, with cherry tomatoes decreasing by 8.59% and green grapes by 6.77% only. The results of this study contribute to the advancement of environmentally friendly packaging materials, aligning with the UN sustainable development goals of reducing food waste and promoting sustainability.

Increasing environmental concerns over using petroleum-based packaging materials in the food industry have encouraged researchers to produce edible food packaging materials from renewable sources. Biopolymer-based edible films and coatings can be implemented as bio-based packaging materials for prolonging the shelf life of food products. However, poor mechanical characteristics and high permeability for water vapor limit their practical applications. In this regard, plant oils (POs) as natural additives have a high potential to overcome certain shortcomings related to the functionality of edible packaging materials. In this paper, a summary of the effects of Pos as natural additives on different properties of edible films and coatings is presented. Moreover, the application of edible films and coatings containing POs for the preservation of different food products is also discussed. It has been found that incorporation of POs could result in improvements in packaging's barrier, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. Furthermore, the incorporation of POs could significantly improve the performance of edible packaging materials in preserving the quality attributes of various food products. Overall, the current review highlights the potential of POs as natural additives for application in edible food packaging materials.

Biopolymers are of growing interest, but to improve some of their poor properties and performance, the formulation of bio-based blends and/or adding of nanoparticles is required. For this purpose, in this work, two different metal oxides, namely zinc oxide (ZnO) and titanium dioxide (TiO2), at different concentrations (0.5, 1, and 2%wt.) were added in polylactic acid (PLA) and polylactic acid/polyamide 11 (PLA/PA11) blends to establish their effects on solid-state properties, morphology, melt behaviour, and photo-oxidation resistance. It seems that the addition of ZnO in PLA leads to a significant reduction in its rigidity, probably due to an inefficient dispersion in the melt state, while the addition of TiO2 does not penalize PLA rigidity. Interestingly, the addition of both ZnO and TiO2 in the PLA/PA11 blend has a positive effect on the rigidity because of blend morphology refinement and leads to a slight increase in film hydrophobicity. The photo-oxidation resistance of the neat PLA and PLA/PA11 blend is significantly reduced due to the presence of both metal oxides, and this must be considered when designing potential applications. The last results suggest that both metal oxides could be considered photo-sensitive degradant agents for biopolymer and biopolymer blends.

Chitosan is a derivative of chitin that is one of the most abundant biopolymers in nature, found in crustacean shells as well as in fungi cell walls. Most of the commercially available chitosans are produced from the exoskeletons of crustaceans. The extraction process involves harsh chemicals, has limited potential due to the seasonal and limited supply and could cause allergic reactions. However, chitosan has been shown to alleviate the negative effect of environmental stressors in plants, but there is sparse evidence of how chitosan source affects this bioactivity. The aim of this study was to investigate the ability of chitosan from mushroom in comparison to crustacean chitosan in enhancing drought stress tolerance in tomato plants (cv. MicroTom). Chitosan treatment was applied through foliar application and plants were exposed to two 14-day drought stress periods at vegetative and fruit set growth stages. Phenotypic (e.g., fruit number and weight), physiological (RWC) and biochemical-stress-related markers (osmolytes, photosynthetic pigments and malondialdehyde) were analyzed at different time points during the crop growth cycle. Our hypothesis was that this drought stress model will negatively impact tomato plants while the foliar application of chitosan extracted from either crustacean or mushroom will alleviate this effect. Our findings indicate that drought stress markedly decreased the leaf relative water content (RWC) and chlorophyll content, increased lipid peroxidation, and significantly reduced the average fruit number. Chitosan application, regardless of the source, improved these parameters and enhanced plant tolerance to drought stress. It provides a comparative study of the biostimulant activity of chitosan from diverse sources and suggests that chitosan sourced from fungi could serve as a more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to the current chitosan from crustaceans.

The abstract provides an overview of a study focused on analyzing diverse strategies to achieve sustainable utilization of synthetic polymers through effective waste management. The escalating global consumption of synthetic polymers has precipitated a concerning increase in plastic waste and environmental degradation. To address this challenge, novel materials with specified application goals, such as engineered plastic, have been developed and are intended for recycling and reuse. Despite the reuse and recycling, when plastic gets disposed into the environment, the degradation properties of plastics render a direct disposal hazard, posing a significant environmental threat. To mitigate these issues, the concept of replacing specific monomers of engineered synthetic plastics with bio-alternatives or blending them with other polymers to enhance sustainability and environmental compatibility has emerged. In this study, Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) plastic is the focal material, and three distinct investigations were conducted. First, replacing ABS plastic's butadiene monomer with natural rubber was explored for its properties and environmental impact. Second, ABS plastic was blended with virgin, recycled, and bio-alternatives of PET (polyethylene terephthalate) and PVC (polyvinyl chloride) polymers. Lastly, recycled ABS blended with recycled PET and PVC was analyzed for mechanical properties. Comparative assessments of these blends were made based on mechanical properties, carbon emissions, and cost-effectiveness. The study determined that the r-ABS/r-PVC (recycled) blend exhibited the most favorable characteristics for practical application.

Bone tissue engineering provides the treatment possibility for segmental long bone defects that are currently an orthopedic dilemma. This review explains different strategies, from biological, material, and preparation points of view, such as using different stem cells, ceramics, and metals, and their corresponding properties for bone tissue engineering applications. In addition, factors such as porosity, surface chemistry, hydrophilicity and degradation behavior that affect scaffold success are introduced. Besides, the most widely used production methods that result in porous materials are discussed. Gene delivery and secretome-based therapies are also introduced as a new generation of therapies. This review outlines the positive results and important limitations remaining in the clinical application of novel bone tissue engineering materials and methods for segmental defects.

Diabetic wounds (DWs) pose a significant health burden worldwide, with their management presenting numerous challenges. Biopolymeric formulations have recently gained attention as promising therapeutic approaches for diabetic wound healing. These formulations, composed of biocompatible and biodegradable polymers, offer unique properties such as controlled drug release, enhanced wound closure, and reduced scarring. In this review, we aim to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of research and future prospects regarding the application of biopolymeric formulations for diabetic wound healing. The review begins by highlighting the underlying pathophysiology of DWs, including impaired angiogenesis, chronic inflammation, and compromised extracellular matrix (ECM) formation. It further explores the key characteristics of biopolymeric materials, such as their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and tunable physicochemical properties, which make them suitable for diabetic wound healing applications. The discussion further delves into the types of biopolymeric formulations utilized in the treatment of DWs. These include hydrogels, nanoparticles (NP), scaffolds, films, and dressings. Furthermore, the review addresses the challenges associated with biopolymeric formulations for diabetic wound healing. In conclusion, biopolymeric formulations present a promising avenue for diabetic wound healing. Their unique properties and versatility allow for tailored approaches to address the specific challenges associated with DWs. However, further research and developments are required to optimize their therapeutic efficacy, stability, manufacturing processes, and regulatory considerations. With continued advancements in biopolymeric formulations, the future holds great promise for improving the management and outcomes of DWs.

Cancer stands as a leading cause of global mortality, with chemotherapy being a pivotal treatment approach, either alone or in conjunction with other therapies. The primary goal of these therapies is to inhibit the growth of cancer cells specifically, while minimizing harm to healthy dividing cells. Conventional treatments, often causing patient discomfort due to side effects, have led researchers to explore innovative, targeted cancer cell therapies. Thus, biopolymer-based aerogels emerge as innovative platforms, showcasing unique properties that respond intelligently to diverse stimuli. This responsiveness enables precise control over the release of anticancer drugs, enhancing therapeutic outcomes. The significance of these aerogels lies in their ability to offer targeted drug delivery with increased efficacy, biocompatibility, and a high drug payload. In this comprehensive review, the author discuss the role of biopolymer-based aerogels as an emerging functionalized platforms in anticancer drug delivery. The review addresses the unique properties of biopolymer-based aerogels showing their smart behavior in responding to different stimuli including temperature, pH, magnetic and redox potential to control anticancer drug release. Finally, the review discusses the application of different biopolymer-based aerogel in delivering different anticancer drugs and also discusses the potential of these platforms in gene delivery applications.

Sustainable agriculture plays a crucial role in meeting the growing global demand for food while minimizing adverse environmental impacts from the overuse of synthetic pesticides and conventional fertilizers. In this context, renewable biopolymers being more sustainable offer a viable solution to improve agricultural sustainability and production. Nano/micro-structural supramolecular biopolymers are among these innovative biopolymers that are much sought after for their unique features. These biomaterials have complex hierarchical structures, great stability, adjustable mechanical strength, stimuli-responsiveness, and self-healing attributes. Functional molecules may be added to their flexible structure, for enabling novel agricultural uses. This overview scrutinizes how nano/micro-structural supramolecular biopolymers may radically alter farming practices and solve lingering problems in agricultural sector namely improve agricultural production, soil health, and resource efficiency. Controlled bioactive ingredient released from biopolymers allows the tailored administration of agrochemicals, bioactive agents, and biostimulators as they enhance nutrient absorption, moisture retention, and root growth. Nano/micro-structural supramolecular biopolymers may protect crops by appending antimicrobials and biosensing entities while their eco-friendliness supports sustainable agriculture. Despite their potential, further studies are warranted to understand and optimize their usage in agricultural domain. This effort seeks to bridge the knowledge gap by investigating their applications, challenges, and future prospects in the agricultural sector. Through experimental investigations and theoretical modeling, this overview aims to provide valuable insights into the practical implementation and optimization of supramolecular biopolymers in sustainable agriculture, ultimately contributing to the development of innovative and eco-friendly solutions to enhance agricultural productivity while minimizing environmental impact.

Sustainable recovery of chitin and its derivatives from shellfish waste will be achieved when the industrial production of these polymers is achieved with a high control of their molecular structure, low costs, and acceptable levels of pollution. Therefore, the conventional chemical method for obtaining these biopolymers needs to be replaced or optimized. The goal of the present review is to ascertain what alternative methods are viable for the industrial-scale production of chitin, chitosan, and their oligomers. Therefore, a detailed review of recent literature was undertaken, focusing on the advantages and disadvantages of each method. The analysis of the existing data allows suggesting that combining conventional, biological, and alternative methods is the most efficient strategy to achieve sustainable production, preventing negative impacts and allowing for the recovery of high added-value compounds from shellfish waste. In conclusion, a new process for obtaining chitinous materials is suggested, with the potential of reducing the consumption of reagents, energy, and water by at least 1/10, 1/4, and 1/3 part with respect to the conventional process, respectively.

Algae-based biopolymers can be used in diverse energy-related applications, such as separators and polymer electrolytes in batteries and fuel cells and also as microalgal biofuel, which is regarded as a highly renewable energy source. For these purposes, different physical, thermochemical, and biochemical properties are necessary, which are discussed within this review, such as porosity, high temperature resistance, or good mechanical properties for batteries and high energy density and abundance of the base materials in case of biofuel, along with the environmental aspects of using algae-based biopolymers in these applications. On the other hand, bacterial biopolymers are also often used in batteries as bacterial cellulose separators or as biopolymer network binders, besides their potential use as polymer electrolytes. In addition, they are also regarded as potential sustainable biofuel producers and converters. This review aims at comparing biopolymers from both aforementioned sources for energy conversion and storage. Challenges regarding the production of algal biopolymers include low scalability and low cost-effectiveness, and for bacterial polymers, slow growth rates and non-optimal fermentation processes often cause challenges. On the other hand, environmental benefits in comparison with conventional polymers and the better biodegradability are large advantages of these biopolymers, which suggest further research to make their production more economical.

Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) is a biodegradable polysaccharide with unique properties that make it an attractive material for various industrial applications. This study focuses on the strain Komagataeibacter medellinensis ID13488, a strain with the ability to produce high yields of BNC under acidic growth conditions and a promising candidate to use for industrial production of BNC. We conducted a comprehensive investigation into the effects of downstream treatments on the structural and mechanical characteristics of BNC. When compared to alkaline-treated BNC, autoclave-treated BNC exhibited around 78% superior flexibility in average, while it displayed nearly 40% lower stiffness on average. An SEM analysis revealed distinct surface characteristics, indicating differences in cellulose chain compaction. FTIR spectra demonstrated increased hydrogen bonding with prolonged interaction time with alkaline solutions. A thermal analysis showed enhanced thermal stability in alkaline-treated BNC, withstanding temperatures of nearly 300 °C before commencing degradation, compared to autoclaved BNC which starts degradation around 200 °C. These findings provide valuable insights for tailoring BNC properties for specific applications, particularly in industries requiring high purity and specific mechanical characteristics.
